What is EndNote Software to manage bibliographic references End Note supported at University of Manchester (others include ProCite and Reference Manager)

How to access EndNote University of Manchester has a site license Available on Cluster PCs (Version 9) Schools have to obtain the software from ITS CompShop Off-site license is £55 + VAT + postage (available from Adept Science)

Uses of EndNote Storing, organising and formatting references Importing references from bibliographic databases Creating a bibliography using the link with Word Searching bibliographic databases

Organising references Create your own database of references - called an EndNote Library (.enl files) References can be formatted using Output Styles Libraries are searchable Each library can contain unlimited references Customisable

EndNote Library

EndNote Record (journal article)

Importing References to EndNote Manually Direct Export from some databases (eg Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus) Importing text files from databases using Import Filters Using Connection Files to connect, search and retrieve references (- limited search facilities)

Direct Typing In EndNote click Reference, New Select Reference Type (article, book, chapter, report etc) Types details in the appropriate field (author, title, year etc)

Importing References Using Import Filters Import filters allow you to import references from databases Have to save the data as a text file Each database uses a different import filter Shows EndNote how to interpret the imported text file

Saving a text file on Medline

Importing a text file

Import Filter Manager

Importing to EndNote using Connection Files Use File and Connect to connect to a database using a connection file Limited search facilities compared to the database’s own search engine results then imported (transferred) into a library Connection File Manager lists available connections

Choosing a Connection File

Creating bibliographies Link between EndNote and Word ( see Tools menu) Cite while you write feature - inserts a citation directly into a Word document Formatting bibliographies using output styles (eg Harvard)

What if I have an existing database of references? A conversion utility is available for Papyrus 6 and 7 on EndNote web site ProCite and Reference manager files can be opened directly in EndNote (choose Open from the file menu) BibTex import utility available on the EndNote web site Conversion utilities for other programs can be downloaded from the Endnote web site

Importing a tab-delimited /tagged file References lists in Access, Excel, etc can be saved as a tab-delimited file and imported Data must be prepared first References in Word must be saved in Tagged format Often easier to cut and paste

Recommendations Keep the imported text files in case of import errors Only use one version of EndNote to edit Only have one library Backup your EndNote Library regularly

Features of EndNote 8 onwards Unicode support - multilingual text, symbols and other technical characters Unlimited size of libraries Capacity to store larger records

Other features Can attach image files to records (.bmp,.tif,.gif) Can attach application files to records EndNote provides pre-formatted templates for use with Word for submission to journals

EndNote 9 features Increased performance – faster More connection files, styles etc Improved multi-language support Easier to share libraries NB version 8 and 9 are directly compatible

Further Help Academic Liaison Librarian Faculty IT Support Desk Library EndNote web pages EndNote Manual – PDF Online EndNote course on WebCT Endnote - http://www.endnote.com AdeptScience - http://www.adeptscience.co.uk
