Mapping Our World Latitude and Longitude- Locate places on Earth

OBJECTIVES:  Describe the difference between latitude and longitude.  Explain why there are different time zones from one geographic area to the next.  Compare and contrast different types of maps.  Compare and contrast different types of remote sensing.  Quiz Chapter 1, on Thursday 09-01-11.

BELL RINGERS  August 29, 2011  List the five areas of study in Earth Science.  List the four main systems in Earth Science.  August 30, 2011  List the steps in the scientific method.  August 31, 2011  Define latitude and longitude

BELL RINGER  September 1, 2011:  September 6, 2011:  Define the terms biotic, abiotic, autotroph and heterotroph.

Location  Name as many ways as possible to describe the location of MPHS.  Which is more accurate.  Interpret the illustration figure 2.1 and 2.2  Compare and contrast latitude and longitude.  Grid on Chicago: State-same as longitude  Madison same as latitude

Calculations  Imagine you are on a plane.  Your plane has flown from 30 N to 42 N  How far have you flown?  If each degree of latitude is roughly 111km.

Time Zones  Earth has 24 time zones  International Date Line-  Explain why time zone boundaries do not strictly follow lines of longitude.  If it is 2PM in New York City, New York, what time is it in Quito, Peru?

Types of Maps  Projections:  Mercator Projection-  Conic Projection-  Gnomonic Projection-  Compare and Contrast Maps

Topographic maps  Purpose for a topographic map  Contour Lines  Contour Interval-  Index Contours-  Depression contour Lines-  Geologic Maps

Geologic Maps  Shows the distribution, arrangement and type of rock located below the soil.  3-D maps.  Map Legends-  Map Scales-  Verbal scales-  Graphic scales-  Fractional scales-

REMOTE SENSING  Landsat Satellite  TOPEX/Poseidon Satellite  Sea Beam  Sonar

Global Positioning System  Uses for GPS technology-  Geographic Information System-GIS-  5 th week assessment Thursday 09-08-11.
