11 © 2010 IBM Corporation11 Individual computers linked to assist in research  To volunteer, individuals register and download a small software program from worldcommunitygrid.org.  The individual computer asks the server for and receives work, which is then processed when the PC has idle capacity.  When the software program finishes the computation, it sends the work back to the server and receives new work.  The more PCs that assist in processing work, the quicker research is completed.

13 © 2010 IBM Corporation13  KidSmart: Since its inception in 2001, IBM has donated over 700 KidSmart units across the island, benefiting over 10,000 children. The continuous efforts in implementing KS in the government-owned digital opportunity centers has been recognized as great helps to the government’s policy in narrowing digital divide.  Reading Companion: 17 elementary schools (most of them located in remote areas ) in Taiwan, are using Reading Companion to enhance their English learning. We are also working with an university professor on her evaluation paper on RC in Taiwan, to move the program forward with better, deeper academic supports.  EngineersWeek : There are around 300 IBM volunteers every year participating in the school visits since 2008. Echoing corporate theme, diversity focus and academic priority, we have reached over 12,000 high school students, mostly girls, with green education and teaming skills.  Mentoring women university students: IBM volunteers from “Women in Technology” had mentored female university students on a 1:1 basis—to give the female talents consultation on their study advancement and career planning.
