Introduction to Network Design
2
2 u Increase revenue and profit u Improve corporate communications u Shorten product-development cycles and increase employee productivity u Build partnerships with other companies u Expand into worldwide markets u Move to a global network business model u Reduce telecommunications and network costs u Expand the data readily available to all employees and fields offices u Improve security u Offer better customer support u Offer new customer services Typical Network Design Business Goals
3
3 Top-Down Network Design Methodology u Good network design must recognize a customer’s requirements. u Customer’s requirements including : l Availability l Scalability l Affordability l Security l Manageability l Service level
4
4 u Top-Down network design is a methodology for designing networks that begins at the upper layers of the OSI reference model before moving to the lower layers. u Focuses on applications, sessions and data transport before the selection of routers, switches and media. u Top-Down network design process includes exploring divisional and group structures. u Iterative Top-Down Network Design Methodology
5
5 Analyzing Business Goals u Working with a client l Research a client’s business l Learn about client’s market, suppliers, products, services and competitive advantages l First meeting: u Explain the organizational structure of the company. u Overall goal of the network design project u Why is the customer embarking on this new network design project? u For what will the new network be used? u How will the new network help the customer be more successful in the customer’s business?
6
6 u Changes in Enterprise Networks l Improve corporate old telecommunications and data processing l Improve corporate communications Analyzing Business Goals
7
7 Identifying the scope of a network design project u Determine scopes l New network or modification l Single network segment or remote access network or whole enterprise network l Refer to 7-layer of OSI reference model
8
8 Identifying a customer’s network applications u Current & new applications u Fill in a chart Name of application Type of application New application? (Yes or No) CriticalityComments
9
9 Analyzing business constraints u Politics and Policies l Escape discussing office politics technological policies u Budgetary and Staffing Constraints l Must fit customer’s budget l The budget should include allocations for equipment purchases, software licenses, maintenance and support agreements, testing, training, staffing, consulting fees and outsourcing expenses.
10
10 u Scheduling l Timeframe for the network design project l Tools for developing a schedule includes milestones, resource assignments, critical- path analysis, etc. Analyzing business constraints
11
11 Business Goals Checklist u Use a checklist to determine if you have addressed your client’s business-oriented objectives and concerns: l Researched the customer’s industry and competition l Understand the customer’s corporate structure l Understand the scope of the network design project l Identified the customer’s network applications l Customer explained policies regarding approved vendors, protocols or platforms. l The budget for the project l Schedule for the project
