Hybrid Technology in Automobiles By Michael Snodgress

Overview of Hybrid Technology Two key components: –Gasoline-powered engine –Electric motor Hybrid vehicles harness excess energy and store it in a high- capacity battery for later use.

Energy Storing Process Explained During natural deceleration, braking, or when the engine is providing excess power, a normal gas-powered vehicle would simply lose the excess power. The process of storing the energy into a battery is called regenerative braking. The automobile then uses the stored energy to power the electric motor to assist in acceleration, thereby using less gasoline.

Types of Technology Technology nameExampleCharacteristics Full HybridToyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive Capable of propelling the vehicle with the gas engine, electric motor, or both simultaneously. Mild HybridHonda’s Integrated Motor Assist Capable of shutting down multiple cylinders in the engine, but must otherwise stay on while in motion. No official name. Another type of hybrid technology General Motor’s first pickupsReceives zero acceleration assistance from the electric system. The engine is capable of shutting off when the car comes to a stop.

Benefits of Hybrid Vehicles Improved gas mileage Subsequent money saved on gas Decreased fuel emissions, therefore better for the environment Gas Savings Calculator < http://www.mixedpower.com/modules.php?name=Gas_Savings>

Example of Hybrid Vehicle 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid 255 horsepower V-6 9 mpg improvement over gasoline-only Accord Accelerates from 0-60 half a second quicker than gasoline-only Accord

How Much Pollution? How many pounds of carbon dioxide does a single gallon of gas produce on average? 20 pounds Which vehicle is the most polluting automobile for 2004? Toyota Sequoia Test Your Fuel Emissions IQ < http://www.care2.com/channels/hybrid/hybrid- quiz.html>

Limiting Factors to Expanded Use Limited number of available models Available models unappealing Uninformed of the substantial benefits Slightly higher costs
