In 13 th paragraph, “You do not know what it’s like to have no position in life.” Women in ancient China did not have their own wills. Men led the society.

Issue Discussion  We choose five criteria to measure the global gender gap. 1.Economic participation 2.Economic opportunity 3.Political empowerment 4.Educational attainment 5. Health and well-being

Economic participation  Women’s presence in the workforce in quantitative terms.  In both developed and developing countries, women are still averaging slightly less than 78% of the wages given to men for the same work.  Although globalization has generated many opportunities, it has sometimes intensified existing inequalities and insecurities for many poor women.

Economic opportunity  The quality of women’s economic involvement.  Women are most often concentrated in “feminized” professions, such as nursing and teaching, office work, care of the elderly and disabled where they tend to remain in lower job categories than men.  Typically, because these functions are carried out by women, they are the lowest paid, in addition to offering limited or no opportunity for advancement.

Political empowerment  The statistics range from 6.8% in the Arab States to 18.6% in the Americas, and 39.7% in the Nordic states.  While women are poorly represented in the lower levels of government, they are still rarer in the upper levels of decision-making.

Educational attainment  Education and literacy reduce mortality rates of female children.  Women still constitute two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population.

Health and well-being  According to the World Health Organization, 585,000 women die every year, over 1,600 every day, from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
