Desalination © The GlobalEd 2 Project

Essential Question: What is desalination? Enduring Understanding: Desalination is the process of removing sodium chloride from water, to make salt water drinkable (i.e., freshwater). © The GlobalEd 2 Project

Who Uses Desalination Techniques and Why? Many island nations that lack sufficient ground water, must use desalination techniques to supply their community with usable water © The GlobalEd 2 Project

Advantages of Desalination Provides method for producing usable water Large bodies of water (e.g., oceans) provide an almost unlimited source of water © The GlobalEd 2 Project

Disadvantages of Desalination Relatively costly process, to desalinate large quantities of water Large capital expense (investment) to build desalination plants © The GlobalEd 2 Project
