2 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Background and Motivation Single vehicle roadway departure (SVRD) crashes account for approximately 20% of all types of vehicle crashes in the U.S. Rumble strips along the sides of highways have created a warning system that has helped prevent SVRD accidents in the outer lanes.

4 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler What happens when a car drifts in between the lanes? Currently, there is no system in place to warn people drifting between lanes on a fast highway.

6 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Principles of Operation The system will recognize when it is on a road with reflective paint and assess the location of the car in relation to the middle of the lane. Safety systems will be used to warn the driver if the car is moving out of this area, and do so safely. Audible or visual warnings are to be given if the car is moving out of the lane.

A competent driver should always be using the vehicle, and should not rely on the system for 100% control. The device is expected to work on a dry and moderately clean road.

11 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Considered Alternatives RF-ID Tags –Transponders placed along the center lane and using triangulation calculations the car would know its position. –Tags are easily corruptible.

13 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Acceptance Tests Tracking Line –At this phase we will be using an oscilloscope to test the voltage output by our sensors to ensure they are working properly. Toggle the Virtual Rumble Strip –Sensors should be able to sense the tracking strip within a short time of initiation. RC car Driven by Microprocessor –The chip will need to control speed and the steering of the vehicle. Using variable outputs on the microprocessor, this should be achievable. Microprocessor follows Tracking Line –For this portion, the microprocessor must be programmed to keep the car directly above the tracking line. Feedback control systems will need to be designed to monitor the degree of deviation. Real World Testing –The Virtual Rumble Strip RC Car will be observed to be functional while driving on real concrete.

14 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Deliverables for April There are five deliverables as listed below: 1.One working prototype of the electronics and car track. 2.The following manufacturing related documentation: –parts list –bill of materials 3.User’s Manual. 4.System specification, including the design concept, block diagram, functional description of the blocks, a system description, and any analysis done during system design. 5.Schematic diagrams and circuit descriptions.

15 Matt Auby Steve Leblanc Joachim Weyl Mariah Winkler Proposed MDR Specifications Settled on a Sensor system. –Optical vs. Microwave Settled on a Design for the Sensor Array. –Should it be two rows of sensors or should it be a V formation, how many sensors, etc. Show that the Sensor Array gives usable results. –Show that the sensor array is providing the necessary data to give suitable feedback to the driver.
