Digital Image Watermarking for Copyright Protection A web-based approach Matthew Willbrand Project Advisors: Prof. Zeng, Prof Banks

Introduction The World Wide Web is a great resource for digital content. The World Wide Web offers unique challenges to overcome in an effort to maintain the integrity of its vast library of content. Copyrighted material used in a manner not consistent with the copyright. The solution – digital watermarking and steganography for the purpose of protecting digital images.

Background (technical) Digital watermarking is a subject which gained interest during the 90’s. Two most commonly used methods of digital watermarking is spatial and frequency domain. Spatial domain less robust to attack. Frequency domain seen as more robust and resistant to attack.

Background (technical) cont. Spatial Domain deals with a neighborhood of pixels. Grey scale manipulation Histogram equalization Discrete formulation Image smoothing Image sharpening High boost filtering Frequency domain is base on the Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT). Each pixel is a signal. The DFT combines two signals to create a new signal as the output.

Literature Survey Watermark-Based Copyright Protection System Security Deadlock problem: pirate inserts watermark into publicly available content and claims it as theirs. Anti-deadlock strategy: certificate authority Watermarking and Ownership Problem: A Revisit Ownership assertion system An Adaptive Digital Image Watermarking Technique for Copyright Protection Perceptual transparency, unamibiguity, robustfulness, tamper-resistant Permutation of scrambled data, modify pixel intensity depending on contrast Robust Content-Based Image Searched for Copyright Protection To detect similar image: search based on points of interest of an image. Cyber Warfare: Steganography vs. Steganalysis Transmit secret messages within multimedia and the science of detecting and retrieving those messages.

Goals and Objectives Implement spatial and frequency domain algorithms for the purpose of inserting digital watermarks or to apply steganography to an image. Develop a secure subscriber based website where subscribers would copyright images, search for similar images and maintain ownership profiles.

Overall Approach Register domain and SSL Certificate. Utilize php, java and C/C++ for the implementation of the spatial and frequency domain algorthims. Utlilize xhtml, javascript, php for website development and implementation. Utilize MySQL database for image storage and retrieval, registration information, membership profiles. Complete by April 26 th.
