3 What is xTRAIN? Web-based program Allows users to electronically process and track required forms for training and related grants – appointment forms – amendments – termination notices

4 What is xTRAIN ? (cont’d) Grantee institution staff can use xTrain to: Create, route, and submit Appointments, Re- appointments, Amendments and Termination Notices Track the status/timing of training actions

5 Exceptions to xTRAIN Eliminates the need for signed paper forms, except: - Permanent U.S. residents: must submit a signed and notarized statement -Payback Service Agreements - Initial Application

6 NIH Awards Supported by xTrain Training – T32, T34, T35, T90, TL1, TU2 – T15 (National Library of Medicine) Fellowships -F30, F31, F32, F34 Institutional Career – K12, KL2, KM1 – Scholar appointments Research Education Awards – R25, R90

8 xTrain External Users & Roles PD/PI (Program Director/Principal Investigator) Responsible for the overall direction of the training program Selects and appoints trainees,amends appointments as needed, and initiates termination notices PD/PI Delegate (ASST) Has delegated authority to perform PD/PI xTrain training appointment functions Cannot submit appointments

11 Accessing xTrain Login to xTRAIN through the eRA Commons at https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/ https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/ Click the xTrain tab on the navigation bar The system displays the appropriate screen based on the user’s role Reminder: An eRA Commons user id is needed in order to use xTrain.
