3 What’s Globalization? It refers to multi-dimensional set of social processes that dilute nation-state boundary and intensify worldwide social interdependence Globalization is a recent phenomenon or has happened long time ago

4 The Globalization Project: The Corporate-led Mode Neo-liberalism: The state is blamed for restricting the economy and limit the role of the market (big, bureaucratic government, too many regulations, too large the public sector, too many taxes) Need to bring back the market to revitalize the economy, to make it more competitive in the global economy

5 Policy: Expand the role of the market (Marketization) Privatization (sell state property) De-regulation (cut down state regulations) Reduce the state of state bureaucracy

6 Marketization ideology penetrates into Society The norm of productivity and efficiency becomes the yardstick to judge other institutions The norm of hyper-competitiveness, not just in the economy, but also in education Examples : -- Education program is to make $, the Rise of diploma, certificate, SPACE -- Citizens are asked to engage in life-long learning to be competitive -- Medical institution is asked to be profit-oriented -- Welfare is a waste of money, create Lazy people, has to be cut back

7 The Impact of Marketization ideology on Society Social Psychological: The competitive personality, the feeling of insecurity, short-sightness Poverty, the working poor due to low wages Exclusion & discrimination against immigrants Social Polarization due to cut backs in education, welfare, & health care The breakdown of social solidarity and community, pit one group against another

8 The Legitimation crisis Citizens dissatisfaction - Expect the government provide more services, But the government ends up providing less The legitimation crisis of the state HK – 500,000 people in July 1 protest Elsewhere – largescale protest against the state The end of the welfare state & social protection
