2. C07202 – Seminar 2 Aims The main learning outcomes of this module are in the development of research skills and working relationships. At the end, students should have improved their ability to: organise and marshal evidence, report on findings, analyse complex ideas and construct sophisticated critical arguments know how and when to draw on the knowledge and expertise of others contribute and comment on ideas in syndicate groups

C07202 – Seminar 3 Structure of Module 4 weeks with Seminars You must attend these seminars You will be given references or reading material for the discussed topics 4 weeks of group work We divide you into groups Each group gets a specific topic (more later) Each group has weekly meetings with a member of staff to discuss the topic Afterwards you have to produce a collaborative essay (~3,000 words) You will need to arrange your own meetings for this! Deadline for essay submission is 10 th January 2005

6. C07202 – Seminar 6 Essay Topics Security has become one of the key concerns of the e-Economy. It also comes in many different guises, confidentiality being one of them. Informatics is not just about information systems and networks. Science in general is also in its realm, and Biochemistry in particular. This is also a two-way process. The boundary between customers and software engineers is not as clear as it used to be. Different roles are emerging in software development. Who is who? The boundary between problems and solutions is not as clear as it used to be. What is more, it can evolve! What is what?

7. C07202 – Seminar 7 What to do in Seminars? Seminars are different to lectures They are more specific They often present the view of the speaker rather than more generally accepted knowledge You might completely disagree! They present the latest research outcomes To get the most out of them Listen to the speaker Ask questions Listen to questions from colleagues and the speaker’s answers Take notes E-mail the speaker or consult his web page if you are interested in learning more about his/her work.

8. C07202 – Seminar 8 Some general remarks The MSc is a one year training programme: don’t leave things for “next year”! You are very much the drivers of the learning process: we are here more to help you develop your career than to train you to be able to follow any career in IT! The MSc is also an excellent opportunity to learn the language and the culture. The UK, Leicester, and the University/Department offer many opportunities to do so.
