Keyframing in the Canvas Panel in Final Cut
2
Keyframing in the Canvas Panel We have already seen that we can set keyframes in the timeline panel in order to control opacity We can also set keyframes in the canvas panel With these we can control several other aspects of a movie
3
Two clips in the timeline The bottom layer is a clip based on the still of the field The upper layer is a clip based on a still of Bart on a transparent background
4
Turning on the wireframe in the canvas panel Normally, the canvas panel shows just the image under the playhead But, to set keyframes, we must...

Turning on the wireframe in the canvas panel... which results in a view like this in the canvas panel
7
Turning on the wireframe in the canvas panel The wireframe in the canvas panel is on the upper layer because That is the layer selected in the timeline
8
Turning on the wireframe in the canvas panel If we select the lower layer in the timeline,... a wireframe appears on that layer in the canvas
9
Notice the colour of the crossbar and control points in the wireframe Initially, the crossbar and control points are white This will change when we set keyframes
10
Dragging layers in the canvas panel In the canvas panel, we can drag the layer with the wireframe But, to see what we are doing, we should...
11
Dragging layers in the canvas panel To see what we are doing when we are dragging in the canvas panel, we should reduce the scale of the view, so...
12
Dragging layers in the canvas panel... so that we can the bigger content Now, we can...
13
Dragging layers in the canvas panel... we can see what we are doing when we drag a wireframed layer in the canvas panel
14
Using keyframes to animate Bart Start by wireframing the Bart layer in the canvas panel Notice the crossbar and control points are white
15
Using keyframes to animate Bart Then drag the Bart layer to the right of the garden The crossbar and control points are still white
16
Using keyframes to animate Bart Then add a motion keyframe (shortcut: ctrl-K)
17
The button for adding a motion keyframe
18
The crossbar and control points turn green after we add a motion keyframe
19
Using keyframes to animate Bart
20
After we have inserted a motion keyframe at first frame (notice green crosshair and points),...
21
Using keyframes to animate Bart Move the playhead to the end of the clip Notice that, when you have done this, the crosshair and control points are white again, because there is no keyframe at this new position
22

25
Using keyframes to animate Bart... add another motion keyframe to contain these settings Notice that the crosshair and control points turn green
26
We must render after we adding motion keyframes If we now try to view the sequence, we find that we must render after adding motion keyframes
27
We must render after we adding motion keyframes So render the video in all parts of the sequence
28
Viewing the rendered animation Below, the playhead is one quarter way across the timeline And, in the canvas, Bart is one quarter way through his movement
29
Viewing the rendered animation Below, the playhead is three quarters across the timeline And, in the canvas, Bart is three quarters through his movement
30
Exporting as a QuickTime movie
31
Seeing the effect of what we have done Although the sequence was exported as a.mov file, the file has been recoded to a.flv file to make it more practical for use on the web See it here http://www.cs.ucc.ie/j.bowen/cs2508/widgets/bartMovingAcrossGarden.flv Now tackle Exercise 8 http://www.cs.ucc.ie/j.bowen/cs2508/exercises/exercise08/
