Pilgrimages Year 8 Spring 1

Task  Why do people go on Pilgrimages?  Compare and contrast a Christian pilgrimage with at least one other religions’ pilgrimage.  Explain the meaning behind it.  The commitment required.  And what is gained by the pilgrim.

You need to be able to:  Show how religions give similar and different answers and can give examples of the effects these views have on life around us.  Give a coherent account of the beliefs and practices of the Christian tradition and at least one other and explain what it means to be committed to particular values and groups.

Levels of Attainment  Level 4 = You will be able to explain the key stages of a pilgrimage but you do not attempt to explain it. Little feelings are expressed.  Level 5 = You can compare and contrast two pilgrimages. You have explained what commitment is required. You can say how a pilgrim feels and what may be gained from going on a pilgrimage.  Level 6 = You can explain what impact a persons commitment to a faith group can have on the wider community. You can express your own viewpoints whilst taking into account that of others.

What form could it take?  An essay  A Project  A PowerPoint presentation  A Newspaper article  A set of posters or a set of models with a guide book  A video diary Be creative but keep in mind what you need to include to achieve the levels.

So what must it include? 1. Details of at least one Christian pilgrimage. 2. Details of one or more pilgrimages from Islam or Hinduism or another religion (you may include more than one religions’ pilgrimage if you wish). 3. Connections between events of the past and actions people take today. (e.g. Christian visit Lourdes because they believe Bernadette saw a vision of Mary, Jesus’ mother and miracles have occurred there). 4. Comparison between reasons behind going on pilgrimage for followers of different faiths and what they believe they gain from it. 5. Your own opinion about what can be gained from going on a special journey. (If you have been on a special journey which you learnt something valuable include your own experiences here).

Make notes now focussing on these questions: 1. What is a pilgrimage? 2. Why would someone go on a pilgrimage? 3. Where could a Christian go on a pilgrimage? 4. What would they do on their pilgrimage? 5. Where could Muslim or Hindu go on a pilgrimage? 6. What would they do on their pilgrimage? 7. Name three things a Christian pilgrim and another pilgrim would have in common. 8. Describe a special journey you have taken or you would like to take and explain what you have/would learn from it.
