2  What are the advantages of involving parents in school settings?  Children with parents who are involved tend to have: –HIGH ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE –GREATER ACHIEVEMENT –MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCHOOL –LOWER DROP-OUT RATES –PARENTS WHO FEEL LIKE THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY BEING INVOLVED.

3 Parents as Teachers: Literacy  Important Accomplishments in language and emergent literacy in these early years include: –Oral language development –Phonological awareness –Listening skills –Conversational competence –Book awareness

4 PAT: Literacy, cntd. –Print interest –Attention fo book content –Pre-writing –Letter awareness

5 PARENTS’ EFFECT ON LITERACY  Read the following scenario: –On a home visit you see how Dad and his six month old daughter hold a conversation. Molly coos and babblesand Dad Imitates her. Mom tells Dad to stop “mocking” Molly. She says he should be respectful of her. She says that no baby talking to Molly is the rule. –This hushing of Dad was certainly NOT what you had in mind

6  Respond to this scene using the Parents as Teachers study. –What would you say to Mom? –What might you say to Dad?

7 Assignment  Create at least a one-half page personal philosophy of what you believe about families and your work as a teacher in early childhood education.
