Before sitting down get a copy of the following... a.) Chem 150 course syllabus and skim through it. b.) Lab 1: Atomic Spectrum of Hydrogen - Prelab questions and prelab prep due at start of class tomorrow. c.) Chemistry Lab Notebook Policy d.) ALE 1: The Wave Nature of Light - Due Friday Brief Introduction to Course Form Teams (you will work together both in class and lab) Team activity for today: Start working on ALE 1 Chemistry Concept Test (start today, finish as homework for Friday)

3 Why will Collaborative and Active Learning rather than lecture be the primary means of instruction in this Course? “You don’t really understand something until you can explain it to your grandmother” (Albert Einstein) “Much as we would like think that we as teachers can tell students what we have learned… the evidence shows that we cannot transfer our knowledge ready-made into students’ minds. Students have to do the actual work of learning by actively making connections and organizing learning into meaningful concepts. When students are interacting with other students to clarify, explain, and understand, they are actively building their own minds.” (from Collaborative Learning 101 by Patricia Cross) This course is structured such that you as students can teach and learn from others.

4 Random formation of Groups
Line up according to your birthday—people born in January towards the front of the room, those in December in the back of the room. Your instructor will then divide you into groups Groups will work together daily for the entire quarter
