3 ‘Ear’ ear To start off our new topic : Answer TRUE or FALSE Challenge: Answer why? 1)If your eardrum breaks you will be deaf forever 2)People use their ears in the same way bats do 3)Antibiotics can treat some hearing problems 4)The ear bones are in the middle of the ear

4 Objectives: Name the parts and positions of the ear (L4) Describe how sound is detected by the ear (L5) Explain some different types of hearing loss (L6) ‘Ear’ ear

5  A’s, you will need a piece of a4 scrap paper, a pencil and something to rest on. You need to turn and face the back of the room next to the person you are partnered with.  B’s, you will describe the diagram we are about to look at. You can talk to each other as much as you like about what to draw BUT A’s must not look at the drawing!  After 4 minutes, swap roles to draw the other half of the diagram. 18 Ear gets blocked by wax Accidents or loud bangs can damage the eardrum Middle ear can get infected Older peoples bones may fuse Nerve cells in the cochlea degrade with time Loud noise may damage the cochlea This can be treated with antibiotics This might repair itself This prevents vibration There is no cure for this Signals are not sent to the brain A doctor can wash this out How might our ears become damaged?

26 The Decibel Scale……Put them from quietest to loudest  Jet engine at about 100m  Watch ticking  Quiet office  Rustling or falling leaves  Birds flying by  Normal conversation  Vacuum cleaner  Quiet conversation  Busy street traffic  Pneumatic drill
