3 Roosevelt and Taft Progress Check 171
What were Theodore Roosevelt’s beliefs about big business, and how did he act on those beliefs during the early 1900’s? He believed that big business was beneficial to the economy, provided that it did not abuse its power and harm the public good. Acting on those beliefs, Roosevelt asked the attorney general to file and antitrust lawsuit against Northern Securities, forced mine owners to accept arbitration to end the coal strike of 1902, and helped regulate big business through “gentlemen’s agreements” with U.S. Steel and other large companies.

4 Roosevelt and Taft Progress Check 172
What were President Roosevelt’s views on conservation, and how did he act on those views? He believed that conservation should guide the nation’s management of its natural resources. He acted on his beliefs by supporting the passing of the Newlands Reclamation Act and establishing a national park system.

5 Roosevelt and Taft Progress Check 174
Which of Taft’s actions most harmed his standing among progressives? He harmed his standing among progressives by signing the Payne-Aldrich Act, which barely cut tariffs on some goods and raised tariffs on others, and by his appointment of conservative lawyer Richard A. Ballinger as secretary of interior.

6 Roosevelt and Taft DBQ 171 Based on the excerpt, how would you describe the attitude of slaughterhouse owners in Sinclair’s time? They were only interested in selling their products and didn’t care how bad or dangerous they were.

7 Roosevelt and Taft Critical Thinking 172
How might Pinchot’s study of forestry have helped him in his work with the U.S. Forest Service? Roosevelt and Pinchot both believed that trained experts in forestry should apply scientific methods in managing natural resources. Pinchot’s studies gave him the expertise for the job.

8 Roosevelt and Taft Critical Thinking 173
