Weather hazards UK

An interesting place to live Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice Click on any of the weather hazard types on the left to see where they occur in the UK and why.

An interesting place to live Fog and mist occur where air cools below the dew point so they are are most common in high areas; on coasts in summer and far inland in winter. Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice

An interesting place to live Flooding is common in the west where moist rain- bearing winds first hit the land. High land also encourages additional rainfall although the effects of flooding may be worst in the low lying land further down the river systems. Heinrichtr. 145, Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice

An interesting place to live Gales and high winds are most common in coastal areas, especially in the west where the main storm systems come off the Atlantic. Upland areas can also experience bigger storm impacts. Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice

An interesting place to live Eastern England and South East England are most drought prone due to the Continental climate influences of air masses from Europe. Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice

An interesting place to live Snow and ice require low temperatures and moist air. It is cold at high altitudes (eg hills), high latitudes (eg the North) and in the South East (continental effects). Cold moist air is common near the East coast in winter. Fog / mist Flooding Gales Drought Snow / ice

Vulnerability versus hazard Study the images and suggest what human factors make people more vulnerable to weather hazards now. Check your ideas by moving the mouse over the image to activate the secret hotspots. Needs Bing aerial view of a town including bldgs on floowdplain, Mways etc

Your turn Click a number, pick a weather hazard 1 Fog 2 Rain 3 Wind 4 Drought 5 Hail 6 Ice/Snow Task: For your hazard, use post-its to create a mindmap on the desk showing: Social, Environmental and Economic impacts of your hazard (include positive and negative impacts. Photograph it and email to alistair@techdis.ac.uk
