MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY Districts 9910 & 9920 and Auckland Girls Grammar School

Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd May 2015 Friday 22 nd & Saturday 23 rd May 2015 Dorothy Winstone Centre Auckland Girls Grammar School Howe Street, Freemans Bay. 9.00am Start.

Participants 94 teams of three students each. Year 12 and 13 students from around 48 schools from Kaitaia down to Pukekohe. Plus a team of RYE students. First time. Each team represents a particular United Nations country. Each team dresses in an appropriate national costume.

Proceedings Secretary General controls proceedings. Ross Robertson, recently retired MP, donates his time on both Friday and Saturday. Six remits have already been distributed to the schools and they have prepared themselves to role play their particular country. Teams have already advised AGGS which remits they wish to speak to.

Speakers are timed by intrepid Rotarians and are quickly followed by the next speaker. At some stage proceedings will be halted as a major event has just occurred somewhere in the world and the Security Council members are called to a separate meeting to discuss and recommend action. They report back later.

Teams and individuals are judged by a number of people over the two days and at the end of the Assembly the winners are announced and prizes awarded by the guest speaker who this year is Brigadier Phil McKee Deputy Chief of NZ Army who will have addressed the Assembly on the role of the NZ army in peacekeeping activities.

Over 400 students and others attend over the two days.

AGGS do all the catering except for BBQ on Friday.

Two minutes later!! You have to be quick.

Rotarians cook several hundred sausages for lunch on Friday.

Entry fee. Entry fee is $220 per team. Most Rotary clubs pay $140 as their contribution and the school pays $80. Second and subsequent teams are usually paid for by the school at $220. However some clubs historically have paid all or part of the entry fee for these too. Your club makes that decision so you should include this in your annual budget.

Notification AGGS will send a notice to all secondary schools in February 2016 announcing the upcoming event. The organising Rotary Club for 2016 sends a copy of that plus a detailed email telling what you need to do plus a list of allocated schools to all clubs in both Districts. This will go to President, Secretary and Youth Director to make sure it is actioned.

Your action Contact your school and ascertain if they are entering a team and make arrangements over payment. When they register a team or teams the organising club is advised by AGGS and the school and your club are invoiced. Pay your own invoice when you get it from the organising club.

Follow up Ask the school to have the students come to your club meeting and tell your members what they did. Attend the Assembly yourself if you want a fun couple of hours on Friday or Saturday. Entry is free.
