5 What is Math Expressions?
Engaging and Involving: Inviting all students to share ideas and questions Promoting analysis and discussion Expecting that all students participate in developing understanding together in the community Managing includes helping students: Monitor Be responsible for and take ownership of their own learning Coaching: Includes five supportive interactions that guide student learning: Model, Cognitive Structure and Clarify, Instruct/Explain, Question, Give Feedback

6 What is Math Expressions?
MX in 3 phases Phase 1 - Start of the lesson Give students manipulatives and have them make sense of them before I tell them anything about what we are using them for. Empower the students.   Phase 2 - a scaffold to get to the formal math methods. Secret code cards Phase 3 - no longer have to do a math drawing except for 2 places: during math talk or a test. If kids come in the door at Phase 3, then as a teacher, it's my job to bring them down, so I know what they know.  Proof drawing allows me to know they understand place value.  Formal method is fine and works, kids can still use it if it's the best for them, I just need them to prove to me they understand place value.   Standard Algorithm does not mean traditional. Use the bridge (ladder) as your scaffold.  Use 100s chart, that can be used on the test.   Learning Path - no matter what, kids should always be moving up on the learning path.  Kids could all be on different phases, and at their own pace, but always moving up.  Just because I go to Phase 2 from 3 doesn't mean they aren't moving up path.  When we just give numbers and no drawings, we aren't giving everyone equal access.

7 Homework and Remembering
Student Activity Book K-5 will receive the consumable books. Discuss the use of the review/test in the book as a review, not the actual unit test. Includes family letters and paper version of manipulatives Homework and Remembering

8 Manipulative Kits Custom Manipulative Kit Teacher Modeling Kit
Includes materials and manipulatives specific to Math Expressions lessons Teacher Modeling Kit Includes teaching posters and larger custom manipulatives for teacher modeling Daily Routines, etc. Both kits are grade specific, so the contents of kits will look different from one grade to another.

9 Math Boards Grades 1-5 Write-on, wipe-off dry erase boards
Supports Math Talk through Math Drawings

10 Kindergarten 1-20 Mat Counting Mat 1 min. (11:14-11:15)
Kindergarten classes receive a special board called a “Counting Mat” instead of a Math Board and starting in Unit 4 it is used to help students with “Making Teen Numbers”. Kindergarten also has a counting mat instead of a Math Board and it is used to compose and decompose numbers. Counting Mat

12 ANYTIME PROBLEM Keisha bought a package of pencils. She can place the pencils into equal groups of 2, 3, or 4. How many pencils could be in the package? Explain. Possible answer: 12; Two groups of 6 equal 12, 3 groups of 4 equal 12, and 4 groups of 3 equal 12. This is Math Talk and getting teachers to get info from students, and discussion, not simply giving answers. Grade 3 Unit 2 Lesson 14
