1 2015 Residential Mechanical Contractors Codes Forum Thank you for taking the time to join us today. We know you are busy and your time is valuable. Our objective today is to discuss some of the recently adopted Minnesota mechanical and residential energy codes, as well as some changes to permitting and licensing requirements for residential gas piping. There are many other changes, we have chosen only a few to discuss today. 1 21 May, 2015

2 Minnesota’s new Residential Energy Code went into effect February 14, 2015. Minnesota’s new Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes went into effect January 24, 2015. 2

3 Get a copy of the codes, or get them online. Please. This will make your work and our work much easier over the next three years. AND, you don’t even have to purchase the book, unless you want to. For the 2015 Minnesota Building Codes, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) contracted with ICC to produce Minnesota-specific code books to include only those chapters from the model codes used in Minnesota and state-specific amendments. The residential energy, residential construction, radon, special provisions and administrative provisions are available in one volume. 6 Use eTRAKiT to apply for some types of permits AND find information and status about projects that have been submitted for review. Go to: https://etrakit.duluthmn.gov/eTRAKiT3/Search/permit.aspx You’ll need to call our office (218-730-5240) to get your login info set up. Our Land Use Techs will help you navigate your first visit to eTRAKiT. 6

7 Once you log in, you can search for permits by contractor, address, status, etc. With the help of our Land Use Techs, you can pay permit fees online using your credit card. Once you find the permit you are looking for, click on it to see specific information. See status of reviews, inspections, as well as reviewer and inspector notes. Contact the Land Use Techs at 730-5240 to learn more about eTRAKiT. 7

8 » Duluth City Council passed a revised ordinance related to residential gas piping in the city of Duluth. ˃Gas piping work in owner-occupied one- or two- family dwelling can be done by a qualified employee of a mechanical contractor with a registered bond with the State of Minnesota Department of Labor and Industries, or the work can be done by a licensed plumbing contractor or the owner-occupant of the home. » The city is required to report data on gas piping permit and inspections separately from other plumbing permits and inspections. ˃Effective immediately, gas piping permits must be applied for and issued separately from other plumbing and HVAC permits. 8 Duluth MN Preparing for 2015 Residential Code Changes

9 » When applying for permits online via eTRAKiT, look for WBS GAS PIPING. Select the appropriate permit type. Fill in the rest of the information as applicable. » Provide a valuation for the gas piping separate from other work. 9

10 » Note that for residential furnace replacements, NO gas piping permit is required for gas piping to the required appliance shut-off within 6 feet of the appliance. » An HVAC permit and inspection is required for furnace replacements. » The gas piping will be inspected when the furnace is inspected. 10
