5 Community College Eligibility All Student Athletes  Student athlete has not been prosecuted as an adult and convicted of specific felonies (Ed Code 67362, AB 2165)  Student athlete must be an amateur (1.1.1)  Full time enrolled student athletes cannot be paid by a CC to coach while eligible to compete in that CC sport (1.1.4)

6 Community College Eligibility First Time Participant  Actively enrolled in 12 units during the term of competition (1.3.1)  9 of 12 units attempted must count toward remediation, career technical education/certificate courses, AA/AS degree requirements, transfer/general education, and/or lower division theoretical major preparation courses as defined by the college catalog and/or articulation agreements (1.3.3)  Courses must be consistent with the athlete’s educational plan (1.3.3)  If sport spans 2 semesters or quarters the athlete must be enrolled in 12 units the first and second term…however:  If a student looses eligibility their first term, he/she can regain eligibility the first day of instruction of the second term (1.3.2)  Must be registered, enrolled, and attending class no later than 4 weeks after the first day of class instruction (1.3.8)

7 Community College Eligibility First Time Participant cont.  Short-term courses can be counted towards the 12 units as long as they start at the beginning of the term. (1.3.5)  A Student Educational Plan (SEP) must be completed by the following dates: (1.3.7)  October 15 th for Fall sports  March 1 st for Spring sports  Eligibility checks will be done on a weekly basis by the college administrative representative  Must be done between Monday at 6am and Tuesday at noon. (1.4.2.A)

8 Continuing Competition Currently In order to play a second season:  A student-athlete must complete 24- semester units before the start of the next season (1.6.1)  18 of the 24 units must be considered units towards an educational goal (1.6.1.D)  GPA between seasons must be at least a 2.0 (1.6.1.E)

9 NEW regulations beginning July 1, 2015  Need a minimum of 24 units completed with a 2.0. (NEW 1.6.1)  In order to be eligible and remain eligible to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition a student athlete has to successfully complete at least 6 units of their total units attempted with a cumulative 2.0 GPA beginning with and including the units taken during the first semester/quarter of competition.  Adopted 4/4/14 effective 7/1/15, Revised 6/19/14 effective 7/1/15 (NEW 1.3)

10 Residency after lapse of time  If two (2) or more years have passed since last competing at a postsecondary institution, the 12-unit residency rule shall be waived. In other words, their last competition must not have occurred less than 2 calendar years prior to the start of the semester of the season of sport. (1.6.1)  Begins July 1, 2015 for any student who last competed prior to June 30, 2013.

11 Transfer Residency  If an athlete transfers to another California community college, he/she will have to successfully complete 12 units in residence prior to beginning of the term they are competing in (1.10.1)  A maximum of 8 units may be from courses completed during the summer or winter sessions immediately preceding the completion of transfer (1.10.5)  The 24 units with a 2.0 must also be reached  Student-athletes that transfer from a 4-yr college/university or an out of state institution are not required to meet residency, but are still required to have 24 units with a 2.0 between seasons

12 Important Terms Participation When a student-athlete sets foot on the playing surface, score is being kept officially, there are officials/refs during competition, and game counts toward the official record/post season play. This burns 1 season of eligibility, even if it was for a matter of 1 play or a few seconds. Scrimmages do not count. Redshirt A student who is enrolling full-time at a school but does not play a whole academic year for the purpose of saving a season. A redshirt does not play in any college game or in any given sport for an entire academic year, even though he/she is eligible.

13 Important Terms Greyshirt Someone who enrolls “part-time” at a school and does not play the first semester for the purpose of saving a season and doesn’t trigger the Division eligibility clock Medical Redshirt Refers to a student who sustained an injury during competition before a specific time period during the season and is out for the rest of the season. The trainer and doctor must fill out the appropriate paperwork.

14 Education and knowledge is Forever!!! NCAA student-athletes who become professional athletes in specific sports: Baseball – 11.6% Men’s ice hockey – 1.3% Football – 1.7% Men’s soccer – 1.0% Men’s basketball – 1.2% Women’s basketball – 0.9%
