4 Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org May 7, 2015 State Board of Education Meeting Update State Board of Education amendments to Rule 160-4-2-.20 LIST OF STATE-FUNDED K-8 SUBJECTS AND 9-12 COURSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING NINTH GRADE IN 2008 AND SUBSEQUENT YEARS are posted for 30 days of public review and comment. This rule is being amended beginning for school year 2015-2016. All state-funded K-8 subjects and 9-12 courses are approved by the State Board of Education (SBOE). Once a course is approved by the SBOE, it is then taken back to the SBOE through the initiation of this Rule (Rule 160-4-2-20 List of K-8 Subject and 9-12 Courses for Students Entering Ninth Grade in 2008 and Subsequent Years) for approval to add it to this Rule. This Rule amendment states that once a course is approved by the SBOE, it is also approved to add to the list of state-funded K-8 subjects and 9-12 courses. This Rule amendment separates the text part of the Rule from the actual list of state- funded K-8 subjects and 9-12 courses so that approved courses can be added to the state-funded list on an ongoing basis without awaiting approval by the SBOE for a second time. Course additions include 10 Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone courses. Deletions include three middle school pathway courses in the area of mechanical occupations. 6/8/20154

Classroom instructional plans include careful selection for when and how to teach cursive writing. This guide will not advocate the use of any particular program for teaching cursive writing. The sole purpose is to give teachers guidance for teaching cursive writing. Local districts are free to choose the program that best meets the needs of its students. The process for the cursive writing instruction from Grade 3 to Grade 5 includes the following: ¨ Local School Board policy for evaluating and approving locally selected writing materials ¨ Parent awareness and participation in handwriting instruction ¨ Interests of individual students in the classroom ¨ Alignment of writing resources to the appropriate standards 6/8/20158
