3 Does Technology Influence Culture? Outside of Education, consider: – Railroads (1830s-1900s) – Assembly line (mass production; 1820s-1900s) – Machine Gun (1890s-) – Telephone (networks; 1880s - ) – Highways (NYC; 1930s)

4 And in Education… Consider: – Printing press (1500s - ) – Radio & TV (propaganda and mass ed; 1920s-) – Xerox copying (1950s-)

5 Questions for Our Thought What is “culture”? What is the “culture of education”? – “Big culture” – common to all institutions – “Little culture” – in a specific place, institution How might technology interact with those forms of educational culture? What interesting questions can, should we ask about these things?

6 How Determinative is Technology? “Hard sense” – A technology causes things to happen; once it is in play, things cannot turn out otherwise “Soft sense” – A technology can shape or influence how things happen, but doesn’t by itself determine what will happen
