2  What percentage of Canada’s population live in urban areas?  What are some of the characteristics that define urban areas? Combination of - size of population (>1000) - high population density - availability of low, middle and higher-order goods/ services - secondary, tertiary and quaternary industries

3  Municipality: Refers to an urban administrative division (village, town or city) that has its own governance. For example, the city of Toronto  CMA: An area that has one or more adjacent municipalities located around an urban core of at least 100,000 people.  There are 33 CMAs in Canada

5  Municipalities usually connected by major transportation network (404, 401, rail lines)  Many people commute from surrounding municipalities into the core  Delineated based on number of commuters in and out of the urban core

6  Calculate the raw population change for Canada’s CMAs from 2005-2010 and complete the CTC follow-up question  Examine the CMAs that decreased in population. What might explain this change?  Start thinking about how “growing outward” can impact human and natural systems

7  Listen to Joni Mitchell’s song Big Yellow TaxiJoni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi  In your group, analyze the message of this song as it relates to the impacts of urban sprawl (p.215)  Use specific examples and lyrics in your analysis Analysis Questions: 1) Identify some of the concerns related to urban sprawl that Mitchell refers to in her song. 1) How do these concerns relate to the Toronto region? 2) What is the main message of this song? Do you believe that this message is valid? Why or why not?
