4 Vending machines are found on nearly every street corner. There is approximately 1 vending machine for every 23 people in Japan. Both hot & cold drinks can be bought.

33 Harajuku 原宿 The pictures on the preceding pages were all taken in Harajuku – an shopping district in Tokyo fahionable among young people. Young Japanese dressed as in these pictures can be seen on any weekend in Harajuku. Just near Harajuku is the famous Meiji Jingu (shrine) where 100s of thousands of people go for their new year prayers during the New Year holidays.

36 Idol Singers アイドル歌手 Since long before any of the ‘Austrlian Idol’ type shows graced the TVs of countries around the world, Japan has had its own brand of “Idols”. ‘Aidoru’ are ‘singers’ or ‘actors’ who are largely chosen for their looks rather than their ability. They are young and かわいい (cute). Basically it’s mass produced pop that has produced hundreds of singers and girl / boy groups who sing and dance.
