Library 2.0 Gillian Wood / Graham Spooner NSW Health & The College of Nursing

What is L2.0?  Based on “next iteration” of the web  Interactive with clients  Social software  Permanent beta  User-driven  Often based around free-software  Don’t seek permission, seek forgiveness (but be careful)

Examples  Amazon.com  Personalised Google  Ask Now!  Wikipedia

But …  I don’t have time to do my job already  Isn’t it just a fad, like KM?  IT won’t support it  Firewall issues  Internet access issues  No need for one

Why?  Improve user experience of the library  Low cost, low effort, high profile  More control and customisation for the user  Bringing library to meet clients’ expectation of the web

Today  Not going to address all arguments  It is a tool  We can use it to our advantage  Explore examples that we’ve used or tried  Give you an idea of what you might be able to do

Technologies  Blogs  RSS  Wikis  IM  Mashups / widgets  Flickr  Tagging  Podcasting  YouTube  Slideshare

Real-time blogging?  Comment sheets circulating  Web 2.0 is all about the social aspects of the web (eg MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, etc)  Content can be created by all

But …  I don’t have time to do my job already  Is there something you can stop doing?  Isn’t it just a fad, like KM?  Possibly, but there are good elements to it  IT won’t support it  Go around them – ask for forgiveness later  Firewall issues  Internet access issues  Some things can’t be solved! Go around them.

Where to from here?  Try the technology for yourself  Try one RSS feed, write a blog, or upload some photos  Ask for suggestions and help  Not every technology is for everyone  Some things will be impossible in some IT environments  Need to be useful for our clients (and us)

Where to from here?  Don’t just jump on the bandwagon  Get a fit to your library and clients  Don’t be afraid to try something new  Have fun!  Discuss at http://hlis.wordpress.com/ http://hlis.wordpress.com/  Discuss with colleagues – form a network?  Share ideas, ask questions

Resources  Look at Library 2.0 in Wikipedia  Blogroll at http://www.bloglines.com/public/hlis2-0 http://www.bloglines.com/public/hlis2-0
