2 2 As a teacher, we need to w Recognize the teaching qualities which lie within us. w Develop these qualities by practicing and testing ourselves. w Maintain these qualities throughout our teaching careers.

3 3 Passion w Is an inner desire expressed. w Provides energy, focus/intensity, persistence, excellence. w Is integral to achieving success and satisfaction. w Motivates teachers to teach out of love, rather than expectation or requirement.

4 4 Respect w Comes from treating opinions and questions with respect. w Seek mutual understanding. w Requires teachers to listen without judgement. w Requires teachers to remember the weaknesses of children. w Assists children to develop obedience, patience and loyalty.

5 5 Compassion w Requires teachers to know who their students are. w Requires teachers to put themselves in their students’ places and empathize with them. w Acknowledge students’ struggles. w Avoid favoritism. w Assists children to develop love, caring, kindness, self-esteem, and obedience.

6 6 Responsibility w Involves discipline and should be accepted as good. w Is evident when teachers set good examples by being responsible to their students. w Requires teaching to have direction and momentum. w Assists children to develop discipline, self- control, and obedience.

7 7 Integrity w Is essential, as the foundation of trust, to cooperation and long-term personal and interpersonal growth. w Is partly honesty - telling the truth (conforming our words to reality). w Is keeping keeping promises and fulfilling expectations (conforming reality to our words). w Requires an integrated character, a oneness with self and with life.

8 8 Integrity (Continued) w Is demonstrate through loyalty to those who are not present. w Treats everyone by the same set of principles. w Avoids any communication that is deceptive. w Assists children to develop truth, honesty, and discernment.

9 9 Initiative w Recognize knowledge is transferable. w Encourages you to find your own ways to enhance learning. w Leads teachers to visualize children’s futures. w Anticipates the needs and reactions of children. w Motivates teachers to be generous, have courage, and be motivated to enhance and facilitate learning. w Assists children to develop generosity, courage, and motivation.

10 10 Forgiveness w Is not a denial of pain, or anger or other emotions we may feel. w Involves absorbing the pain and letting the offender go free. w Is not dependent on the repentance of the perpetrator, or the one who has offended us. w Is not synonymous with restoration of things to the way they once were; in fact they can never be the same. w Is becoming unhooked emotionally and achieving freedom. w Assists children to develop humility, joy, peace, and love.

11 11 Character Development w Recognize that children develop character slowly and in stages. w Respect children and require respect in return. w Teach and develop character by example. w Help children learn to think honestly. w Help children assume real responsibilities. w Balance a high support and a high level of control. w Initiate and demonstrate forgiveness - regardless of blame. w Provide ways for children to make choices w Ask questions instead of giving answers
