Unlike grapefruit except when it is overmature, the pummelo’s central core is usually open but in better varieties it is closed to some extent.

Probably arose as a hybrid between sweet orange and pummelo (Shaddock) in Jamaica and long known as the forbidden fruit!

Captain Shaddock introduced pummelo to Barbados in 1649 but in 1823 grapefruit was mentioned.

Hodgson says that grapefruit is a natural hybrid of Pummelo but Swingle speculate that sinensis and grandis. Later Scora concludes that it sinensis and grandis.
