4 Transport infrastructure and accessibility I. Road transport – the most preferred type of transport Transport in the Nitra Region is based mainly on roads. Total length of roads in the region is 2 602 km. Distance of all regional and sub-regional centres from Nitra is less than 100 km All municipalities are connected to the public road network, mainly by the 2nd and the 3rd class roads. These represent the most common type of roads. Region has a shortage of expressways. Currently only about 68 km of expressways are in operation, next sections are only in the stage of their preparation. There are no motorways in the region. 5 Transport infrastructure and accessibility II. Railway transport Railways serve to both personal and goods transport. Total length of railways in the region is 568 km (i.e. 15,5 % of the length of Slovakian railways). Density of railways is 0,090 km per km 2 Quality of the railway infrastructure in the region is different. The most important electrified railways are passing the south of region. They represent an important part of Slovakian railways but also an integral part of European railway network. Other railways are not electrified and have mostly local or regional importance. In comparison to other Slovak regions (e. g. Bratislava, Trnava, Žilina), railway transport in Nitra region can be considered as underdeveloped Air transport Region’s most important airport is airport Nitra – Janíkovce. Although it has a character of an international airport with development possibilities, it is used mainly for sport purposes and its importance for personal transport is negligible. In region there are also several smaller airports used for sport or agricultural purposes. The nearest airports relevant for personal transport are located in Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest Water transport Nowadays, the only route of water transport in the region is river Danube. It serves mainly for the transport of goods. It is one of the most important part of European network of water transport.

6 In Nitra Region there is more than 110,000 pupils and students. Approximately 47% of them are primary school pupils, 31% attend secondary schools, and more than 22% attend colleges or universities. In most towns of the region are vocational schools, high schools and business colleges City of Nitra is a well-known centre of higher education. 7 In the Nitre self-governing region, the highest number of foreign direct investments (FDI) was directed mainly into the area of Nitra, Zlaté Moravce and Levice. As far as industry is concerned, FDI were used primarily in machinery and chemical industry, in which predominates manufacture of plastics. Important role in the structure of region´s industry has also manufacture of electrical equipment and automotive industry. On the other hand, it can be observed a significant decline of some traditional industries such as manufacture of food products (especially primary production) or manufacture of paper. 8 Foreign Direct Investment Nitra region recorded strong growth in the inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI). Significant inflow was recorded in 2007 when the total value of FDI reached 716 million EUR, which represents 3.1% of the total FDI inflows into Slovakia.
