4 IKEA history – how it all began The IKEA story begins in 1926 when founder Ingvar Kamprad is born in Småland in southern Sweden. He grew up on ‘Elmtaryd’, a farm near the small village of Agunnaryd. Even as a boy Ingvar knew he wanted to develop a business. 5 1920s At the age of five Ingvar Kamprad starts selling matches to neighbours. A few years later he expands to selling flower seeds, greeting cards, Christmas tree decorations, and later pencils and ball-point pens. IKEA Timeline All images courtesy IKEA c inter IKEA Systems BV 2008

6 Ingvar Kamprad develops IKEA into a furniture retail company. During this period a lot of testing and trailing of furniture design, self assembly, advertising, the use of a catalogue and a showroom to reach the mass market. 1940 -1950’s furniture design In 1958 Gillis Lundgren designs the TORE drawer unit having been inspired an IKEA kitchen design. It’s still made today. How many years ago was this designed? Good design lasts. marketing & retailing 1951, first IKEA catalogue published. 1958, first IKEA store opens in Sweden. 1956 - Flat pack and self-assembly is introduced. 7 Design classics are developed such as POÄNG, OGLA, SKOPE and BILLY bookcase. 1960 -1970’s SKOPAPOÄNG OGLA – a product that show IKEA design concepts of form, function and competitive pricing. 8 1960 -1970’s BILLY bookcase Innovation in techniques and testing Particle board is introduced as it is inexpensive, hard-wearing and easy-to-process material. The PRIVAT sofa is designed by architect Ake Friryter. A particle board base with white lacquer finish and floral textile covers by textile artist Sven Fristedt. 9 Stores open USA, Italy, France UK. LACK shelve KLIPPAN sofa 1980’s More IKEA classics arrive such as KLIPPAN, LACK and MOMENT LACK table using a sandwich technique called board-on-frame. Inspiration from a supermarket resulted in the design of the MOMENT range – can you recognise the source of the idea? 10 Children’s IKEA is introduced and the focus is on furniture solutions to meet the needs of families with children. 1990’s First PS collection. PS stands for Post Scriptum – latest addition to the IKEA design values – form and function at a low price.
