What is a Vacuum Pump?  A vacuum pump is a device that removes gas from a set volume.  It was invented by Otto von Guericke in 1650.  It serves as the opposite as an air compressor.

What kinds of vacuum pumps are available?  Positive Displacement  Momentum Transfer  Entrapment

Positive Displacement  A positive displacement pump uses a mechanical system to expand a volume in order to create a vacuum.  Some examples of positive displacement pumps are piston pumps, wankel pumps, the diaphragm muscle, and roots blowers.

Positive Displacement Pump Manual Water PumpScroll PumpRotary Vane Pump

Momentum Transfer  A momentum transfer pump works by accelerating the gas in the chamber from the intake side to the exhaust side. This must occur below 1 kPa.  Some examples of momentum transfer pumps are diffusion pumps and turbomolecular pumps.

Momentum Transfer Pumps Turbomolecular Pump

Entrapment  The entrapment method is done by putting the chamber into a state in order to condense the chamber gases and make them capable of being pulled out. This may be done by putting the chamber into freezing conditions or reacting the chamber gases with a chemical.  Examples are ion pumps and cryopumps.
