Echo was a beautiful, woodland nymph, who helped the Olympian god, Zeus, cheat on his wife, Hera. After some time, Hera caught on to their schemes, and decided to punish Echo. She did this by taking away Echo’s voice. Therefore, she was only able to repeat the words of others.

One day, while out in the woods, Echo spotted Narcissus
One day, while out in the woods, Echo spotted Narcissus. She followed the handsome, young man and wanted, so badly, to address him, but she was unable to speak the first words. Narcissus went deeper and deeper into the woods and stopped at a small stream. As he leaned over to get a drink, he caught sight of his reflection in the water. He was taken back by his beauty and quietly said to himself, “I love you.” Echo heard this and quickly repeated, “I love you.”

But it was too late. Narcissus was already fell in love with himself, and he didn’t care about anything else. He would not leave the stream to eat or drink, so he died of thirst and hunger. Right where he laid, a flower grew. It was known as the Narcissus flower. Today we have the term narcissistic personality, which means that someone is too wrapped up in themselves and they exclude all others.

For the rest of her life, Echo spent her days mourning the loss of the love she never had. Because she was so depressed, she died of hunger, thirst, and unreturned love. However, when Echo died it is said that her bones turned to stone. To this day, her voice sounds everywhere.
