Life Cycle Assessment & Carbon footprint With ‘Simapro’ By Sunil Kumar Head, SIPL New Delhi, India

SIPL www.simaproindia.com The purpose of PRé is to make a positive change in the world, by providing: – the tools The most widely used LCA software SimaPro With the best databases and impact assessment methods – the knowledge Innovative contributions to LCA methodologies, like eco-indicator and ReCiPe High level consultancy team Excellent LCA courses – the network Our 21 International partners Access to a huge network of experts that like working with us, because we are open, willing to share and trustworthy …..to help decision-making for sustainable policies, products and services. PRé Consultants and its partners

SIPL LCA Value Chain & Simapro Network www.simaproindia.com Everywhere, people want to transform data into indicators, to solve management issues. We provide the processor (SimaPro), the data and some of the methods Consultancy has the understanding of the methodological developments; the scouts We help organizing the LCA community We help the community to organize the data (open source data We develop simple ecodesign tools (software and paper) We provide open source connectors to develop management tools We are recognized experts in impact assessment We provide the most widely used software Our consultants will know everything about this We train people how to do LCA We review, and we do

SIPL www.simaproindia.com What is LCA ? Materials processing maintenance Productionuserecycling landfill Step 1: Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Step 2: Life Cycle Inventory Analyses (LCIA) emissions to air emissions to water and soil materials energy

SIPL www.simaproindia.com The next step: Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) = creating a “single indicator” 2 types of single indicator systems -based on CO2 equiv. only the Carbon Footprint -based on damage the Ecoindicator99 What is LCA? cont.

SIPL www.simaproindia.com What is LCA? cont. The Carbon Footprint: the simplistic approach Throw away 99% of the list: count CO2 (equiv.) only Advantage: it is simple Disadvantage: toxic substances (e.g. fine dust, heavy metals, etc.) are not taken into account

SIPL www.simaproindia.com What is LCA? cont. LCI result Raw materials Land use CO2 VOS P SO2 NOx CFC Cd PAH DDT Raw materials Land use CO2 VOS P SO2 NOx CFC Cd PAH DDT Eco- systems (PDF) Eco- systems (PDF) Human health (DALY) Resources (Surplus E) Resources (Surplus E) Ozone layer Climate Carcinogens Respiratory (2) Eco-tox acid. nutri. land use fossil fuels Minerals Single score Ecoindicator99, a damage based system

SIPL www.simaproindia.com The Carbon footprint is a sub-set of the data covered by a more complete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) One of the key impact categories considered in an LCA is Climate change, generally using the already named IPCC characterization factors. Hence, a Carbon footprint is a Life Cycle Assessment with the analysis limited to emissions that have an effect on Climate change. Carbon footprint with LCA

SIPL Design for Environment (DfE) The integration of environmental considerations into product and process design – Fundamental to DfE is the use of tools and practices that encourage environmental responsibility and simultaneously reduce costs, promote competitiveness and enhance innovation – DfE practices are meant to develop more environmentally compatible products and processes while maintaining (and in some cases even exceeding) price, performance and quality standards www.simaproindia.com

SIPL A broad range of activities ranging from business to business transfer of product specific environmental information to environmental labelling in retail marketing The overall goal of eco-labelling is to encourage the demand for, and supply of, products and services that are environmentally preferable through the provision of verifiable, accurate and non-deceptive information on environmental aspects of products and services Eco - labelling www.simaproindia.com
