3  The recovery of material evidence remaining from the past.

4  Location: Southeast Virginia near Nottoway River  Humans lived there as early as 15,000 years ago.  One of the oldest sites in North America

5  Archaeology: Cactus Hill Archaeology: Cactus Hill

6  Your team of archaeologists have just discovered the ancient site of Jadetopolis and recovered an artifact.  Your team must carefully sift through the dirt to not destroy the precious artifact.  Along with your team, reconstruct the pieces of the ancient artifact

7  Get into your groups: Assign every person a role (Writer, Sifter, Brusher, Compiler)  With your group go to any station on the ground  Carefully open the plastic bag and pour the contents of the bag in the sifting tray  Use the paint brushes to carefully remove the dirt from the pieces  See if you can put the pieces back together to its original form  After cleaning up and putting the contents back into the plastic bag, get into your groups and answer the follow up questions

8  Writer – Writes the answers for the group  Sifter – Pours the bag of dirt into the sifting tray and assists with finding the pieces  Brusher – Uses the brush to clean the pieces off  Compiler – Along with the writer helps put the artifact together

9  1. Why is archaeology important?  2. What do you think are some difficulties archaeologists face when excavating?  3. What do you think the biggest challenge would be for an archaeologist?  4. What can we learn from archaeological discoveries?  5. What are some things that you think archaeologists have discovered?  6. How does new information change our perception and understanding of the past and/or present?

10  Do you think being an archaeologist would be an interesting job? What skills do you think are needed to be an archaeologist? Is it a job you are interested in pursing?

11 NNatural Resources: comes directly from nature. HHuman Resources: people working to produce goods and services. CCapital Resources: goods produced and used to make other goods and services.

12 Resource Word Sort - In your envelope is examples of the 3 types of resources. Decide if each example is a capital, human, or natural resource. Write the word under the correct column on your charts.
