GSTC2 Agenda n Please Sign In! n GSWG Review - Our History n GSTC - Future Direction n Excerpts from our Charter n Membership Discussion n TAC GSTC Presentation n Next Steps

GSTC3 GSWG History n Established Space Inflatables (later Gossamer Spacecraft) Working Group (GSWG) in April 1998 u Group has met formally every year at AIAA SDM and informally (~twice/year) n John and Dave are conscripted at the 2001 SDM conference and work on formalization of the GSTC n The GSWG developed the GSTC charter and TAC presentation for the August 2001 TAC review n TAC informed the GSWG in October 2001 that 65 of the 66 TCs had approved our formation and thought STRTC would also…but they didn’t n The GSWG met with the STRTC April 22, 2002 and...

GSTC4 GSTC Future Direction n Make formal presentation to the AIAA TAC New Initiatives Subcommittee at the Modeling and Simulation Conference and Exhibit 5 - 8 Aug 2002 Monterey, California n Become formally established as the GSTC n Formalize charter and participants n Address items in the charter through subcommittees n Establish links to other AIAA TCs

GSTC5 The GSTC Charter n Draft charter is released n Please provide comments! Looking for comments to foster improvements in effectiveness n Looking for an electronic home (e-mail for now until we establish a website) n We need to establish subcommittees and increase activities

GSTC6 GSTC Charter Details

GSTC7 GSTC Charter Details Example

GSTC8 TC Membership n AIAA has formal guidelines & forms for membership (http://www.aiaa.org/participate/) u Representation from industry academia & government u Cross functional technical representation u Geographic representation u Limit of 35, but can add Associates (under 35 years old) u Usually not on more than one TC u Must join AIAA u Membership is for 1 year with options to 3 n Must fill out “nomination” form to gain a written endorsement from your workplace that you will be funded to attend meetings n We will have a “Friends” membership as well (cc info)

Proposal for Formation of the Gossamer Spacecraft Technical Committee Presented to The AIAA TAC New Initiatives Subcommittee Meeting Modeling and Simulation Conference and Exhibit 5 - 8 Aug 2002 Monterey, California Dave Cadogan Chairman Gossamer Spacecraft Working Group March 12, 2002 AIAA TAC

GSTC10 Agenda n Background n Goals/Scope n Summary of Past Events n Membership and Organization n Future Activities and Plans n Recommendation AIAA TAC

GSTC11 What is a Gossamer Spacecraft? n Examples: u Antennas u Solar Sails u Solar Arrays u Telescopes u Habitats u Solar concentrators u Sunshades u ED&L Systems u Decoys u Rovers u Radiators u Space suits n Technical Focus: u Packing & deployment methods & effects u Rigidization methods & materials u Membrane technology u Highly integrated, multi-functional components u Mission concept development u Non-linear, large deflection analysis Gossamer spacecraft are systems that have high deployed to packed volume ratios and are extremely low in mass. AIAA TAC

GSTC12 Why a Gossamer Spacecraft TC n Unique area that is rapidly growing in interest within the space community n No specific forum exists for Gossamer Spacecraft to promote: u Technology development u User education u Space community awareness u Cross-discipline interaction n Space systems effectiveness will increase through gossamer spacecraft advancement & application n Special forum to foster discussion on interrelated issues that are the heart of making a Gossamer system n The topic is emerging and is often shunned by various disciplines…needs its own forum to mature AIAA TAC

GSTC13 Committee Goals n To establish Gossamer Spacecraft expertise within the AIAA u Provide a technical resource for AIAA u Attract new members n To promote technical interchange between members of various disciplines within the space community u Provide a forum for communication between technology developers and mission planners u Provide leadership & direction to the community u Promote technical interchange with other AIAA TCs, AIAA members, & other professional organizations n Advance the understanding of Gossamer spacecraft within the space community u Sponsor conferences & sessions u Technical publications (papers/journals/books) u Student participation & activities u Workshops & Website presentations AIAA TAC

GSTC14 Communications Plan n Request a liaison from other TCs attend one GSTC meeting per year and be include on “friends of GSTC list” (most will have opportunity at SDM Conf.) n Copy meeting minutes to other TCs and request feedback n Make presentations to other TCs at their meetings n Write Bi-annual interface summaries for inclusion with minutes n AIAA TCs the GSTC should interact with heavily: u Structures u Adaptive Structures u Materials u Space Systems u Aerodynamic Decelerators u Balloon Systems u LTA Communications are critical to meet our goals! AIAA TAC

GSTC15 Proposed Scope of The Gossamer Spacecraft Technical Committee The purpose of Gossamer Spacecraft Technical Committee (GSTC) is to develop and promote the science and technology of analyzing, designing, manufacturing, and evaluating the materials and components that are unique to gossamer inflatable, deployable, and membrane Spacecraft. This will be accomplished by providing a forum for technical interchange, by providing leadership and a collective informed decision making body (which will include industry, academia, and government). The GSTC will also encourage the development and dissemination of technical information, promote technology awareness through outreach activities such as workshops and website development, assist in the development of industry standards, and foster technology awareness through relations with other TCs and professional organizations.
