Before the Bologna Process Students mobility: Supported by DAAD, Erasmus and other sources Mainly focused to specialization electives Workload estimation: Based on hours per week Lectures, accompanying exercises, personal study Documentation: (“Diploma Suplement“) Specification of type, area and content of each Lecture,. pre-requirements, critera for evaluation Professors mobility: Based on sabbatical semesters © cm

What is the ECTS? The European credit transfer and accumulation system is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme, objectives preferably specified in terms of the learning outcomes and competences to be acquired. © cm After the Bologna Declaration

What are the key features of ECTS? Workload. One credit stands for around 25 to 30 working hours. Credits in ECTS measure successful completion of work Student workload in ECTS consists of the time required to complete all planned learning activities such as attending lectures, seminars, independent and private study, preparation of projects, examinations, and so forth. A Bachelor program comprises between 180 and 240 Credits (3 to 4 study-years) A Master program comprises between 90 and 120 Credits (3 to 4 semesters) © cm

Transition from hours/week/semester to credit points Lectures, laboratories and exercises 1 hour/week/semester = 1.5 credit points Seminars 1 hour/week/semester = 2 credit points © cm At the Department of Informatics, University of Dortmund:

Tracking and quality control Individual control of students progress: Office of academic statistics Attempts to quality control of changes in curriculum: Feedback from students attending the lecture Feedback from colleagues teaching a course that requires the. modified one as pre-requirement Feedback from former students working in industry Comparison with similar courses at other universities, as well as. possibly IEEE and ACM standards © cm

Some typical ECT-related problems: National and local Regulations I s it true that Math. II = Math. II ? Normal distribution of grades © cm Language Unavoidable problems to be aware of
