2 Space Systems Engineering: Ethics Module 2 Ethics Instruction Using the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident  Assign the students to read the Space Shuttle Challenger ethics case study materials on the Texas Space Grant Consortium website: http://www.tsgc.utexas.edu/archive/general/ethics/  Encourage additional readings on the subject from other sources.  Dedicate one class to a participatory ethics discussion (as outlined on the next slide).

3 Space Systems Engineering: Ethics Module 3 In-Class Exercise Using the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident (1/2)  Divide the class into small groups. Each group is to choose one of the four personnel roles below and develop a statement outlining the position represented by those in that role on January 28, 1986. Develop two statements: (1) what you think was the position of those in your role, and (2) the position that those in your role should have taken. NASA Management Thiokol Engineers Thiokol Management Rockwell Management  Use class time for each group to role play and present their statements.  Use the various issue questions at the end of the case study to prompt the student’s further on their positions.

4 Space Systems Engineering: Ethics Module 4 In-Class Exercise Using the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident (2/2)  As a class really discuss whether it was an issue of ethics or decision making based on poor quality and lack of data.  Make note that at the time, the United States civilian space program had never lost a crew, and the issuance of waivers had become the norm. Maybe it was the cavalier nature of granting waivers that was unethical.
