1 What is a ratio? A ratio is just a comparison of two numbers or values, expressed in the same terms or units. In other words, in ratios we always compare dollars to dollars, pounds to pounds, hours to hours, and so on. A ratio can be written in words, with a colon, or as a fraction. Ratios are always written in reduced form. Ex: 2 apples you eat to 3 apples I eat Ratio: 2 to 3, 2:3, 2/3 Answer the following: 1. Can you compare two different units such as minutes to hours with rations? ___ 2. What are the three ways you can write the following as a ratio 1 hour of homework to 1 hour on the phone? _______________________________________

2 Step by Step Instructions: Step 1: Make sure both values are expressed in the same units (if not, then do quick unit conversions) Step 2: Create a fractions from the two numbers. The first number should go on top. In other words, the ratio of “this to that” = this/that Step 3: Reduce the fraction, and you’ve got your ratio! You can leave the final answer as a fraction, put it in words, or just use a colon to separate the two numbers
