2 The new GIZ Gender Strategy Integration and extended company purpose The new GIZ gender strategy that is officially launched by the executive management today is binding for all organisational units. It uses a two-track approach - mainstreaming and specific activities – and has Five strategic elements: Political will and accountability Corporate culture Gender equality within the company Gender competence Process adjustment Areas to be monitored with regards to the realisation of the gender strategy are: Contract and cooperation design, Gender equality within the company, and acquisition. 3 The GIZ Africa Gender Concept (2010) …. aims at „bringing gender to life“, building on the long-standing gender expertise in the GIZ Africa department ….has the same strategic elements as the companywide gender strategy …defines indicators for each of the 5 strategic elements Sample indicators are :  80% of gender focal points in dept. 1 have a clear mandate and the necessary know-how and resources to fulfill their tasks (companywide survey)  in at least 80% of the ZAK-proposals, gender is integrated according to the company's criteria  at least 80% of the proposals for new projects include a gender analysis … monitors the realisation of the gender strategy as part of the monitoring of the annual department goals SN Meeting Health and Social Protection Africa/ MENA/ LAC, Working Group Gender 08.03.2012

6 Results from the first Africa Gender Network Meeting in Nairobi (Sept. 2011) Main topics and results were: Clarification of the role of gender focal points Exchange of experience and agreements on future collaboration Recommendations to the management in dept.1 (selection): – To involve the field structure into the development of the new gender strategy – To combine all GIZ instruments for wider and more effective gender mainstreaming – To integrate gender into the sector networks – To integrate gender into country planning – To ensure sufficient allocation of resources for the tasks of gender focal points SN Meeting Health and Social Protection Africa/ MENA/ LAC, Working Group Gender 08.03.2012

7 TOR Gender Focal Points What is the role of gender focal points in GIZ Germany? In the Africa regional divisions, e.g. division 1200: counseling colleagues in the department on ensuring gender mainstreaming in programme proposals and throughout the contract management process providing advice with regards to gender analyses: facilitating linkages and acting as an information broker providing support to the gender focal points in division 1200 partner countries and ensuring information flow into and from division 1200 into other organisational units In the health and social protection divisions: advise to head of division and management team on coordination, implementation and monitoring of measures regarding Gender-Mainstreaming strategy advise on concept development with regard to gender analysis, feedback to ZAK, project proposals SN Meeting Health and Social Protection Africa/ MENA/ LAC, Working Group Gender 08.03.2012
