1 Developing Skills through Volunteering Meher Kalenderian Head of Student Activities Department Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA)

2 Meet Jo, Volunteer Language Assistant Through this volunteering opportunity, Jo has: - Developed social skills - Improved communication skills - Gained class management skills Discovered talent and interest in this field and is currently working towards a qualification in becoming a teacher.

3 Meet Jo, - Volunteer - Organises weekly tea parties for the elderly - Treasurer of a Volunteering Group. - Jo is now a very reliable and knowledgeable events organiser - Has gained organisation and communication skills by arranging the weekly events - Discovered joy of Befriending Being a treasurer Jo has: -Gained experience handling cash -Budgeting / applying for funding. -Gained basic accounting skills (preparing end of term budget reports)

4 Meet Jo, A Group leader of one of EUSA’s Volunteering Groups -Gained confidence -Developed many skills including: Conflict resolution in groups Running efficient meetings Organisation skills Public speaking - Jo is a 4 th year Business Student and has recently secured an internship with Lloyds bank.

5 EUSA activities team provided: - Support, training, funding and guidance to Jo along the way. - Were the advisors/mentors and the friends. - Promoted Jo’s work through their vast contacts and networks. - Were simply there when needed.

6  Jo believed in the volunteering role  Reflected on and Gave value to the skills gained/developed  Jo was able to sell the volunteering experience to the employers as work experience.

7 Now you’ve met Jo… No matter what the volunteering role was, Jo certainly gained new skills, developed existing skills, met new people, impressed the employers, and had lots of fun along the way! Jo is: JoannaJoseph Josephine Jo Could Also Be YOU…
