2 Why do we get hungry? We feel hungry when our stomach is empty when out stomach contracts. When our stomach feels full, we are not hungry. Balloon Experiment:

3 Biological Influences Mid-hypothalamic centers in the brain monitoring appetite Appetite hormones Stomach cramps Universal attraction to sweet and salty Adaptive weariness to novel foods Psychological Influences Sight and smell of food Variety of foods available Memory of time elapsed since last meal Mood Social-cultural influences: Culturally learned taste preferences Learned restraint in cultures idealizing thinness Eating Behavior

4 The Brain Our brain helps us control our body chemistry and makes us feel hungry when we need to eat by releasing the hormone OREXIM Hypothalamus has two parts: Lateral Hypothalamus when stimulated causes the organism to eat. Destruction of this area, you wont want to eat therefore starve. Ventromedial depresses hunger, stops eating. If destroyed you’ll eat forever If function properly: BALANCE Fat Rat

5 Hormones Insulin: hormones created by pancreas, controls blood glucose levels. Leptin: proteins given off by fat cells when there is a lot of this hormone, the brain increases the metabolism. Orexin: hormone that is triggered by the hypothalamus that makes you hungry. Ghrelin: when your stomach is empty, it sends signals to your brain that you need food. P.Y.Y: tells the brain when you’re not hungry.
