Spearheaded by Feeding America, it is the largest study of its kind, with 1390 individuals and 526 agencies interviewed in 2009. Statistically valid, it seeks to identify who is struggling with hunger, why and what the response is. Study happens every 4 years, allowing us to analyze trends. About Hunger in America:

888,100 unduplicated Arizonans received emergency food in 2009: 85% increase over 2005. 46% were children under the age of 18; 7% were seniors over 65; 12% were homeless. 54% female, 46% male. In AZ: 46% Hispanic, 39% White, 5% Black. 77% of households experienced food insecurity. On average, 127,300 Arizonans receive assistance at food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in any given week. Key Findings:

Forced to choose between paying for food and mortgage/rent, utilities, medicine/medical care, and transportation/ gas: People Making Tough Choices:

69% applied for SNAP (Food Stamps); 30% enrolled Breaking stereotypes: over 30% employed; 27% had attended college. 39% of agencies were faith based – huge future potential. Funding safety net and living-wage job creation. Outreach to maximize existing program awareness and participation. Other Findings & Action Items:
