4 VDOE Guidelines Factors that may be included in determining whether communications are appropriate: The subject, content, purpose, authorization, timing, and frequency of the communication; Whether there was an attempt to conceal the communication from supervisors and/or parents; Whether the communication could be reasonably interpreted as soliciting sexual content or a romantic relationship; and Whether the communication was sexually explicit

5 Facebook Guidelines What Teachers should avoid :  Sending students friend requests  Accepting friend requests from students  Leaving inappropriate status updates  Posting (OR BEING TAGGED IN) provocative pictures or videos  Joining inappropriate fan pages  Commenting on student drama  Displaying personal contact information  Having open/public privacy settings

6 Facebook Guidelines What Teachers should avoid : Discipline for off-duty online misconduct by public school employees is justified when it is:  Disruptive to school environment  Impairs teacher’s ability to perform duties  Discloses confidential sensitive student information and school records  Defames the school or it’s personnel
