B, tetanus and Human Papilloma Virus for girls Sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, alcohol and substance abuse, sexual activity and DUI

3 Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa ▫10% of adolescence Bulimia ▫4 % of women ▫Not just girls, some wrestlers Binge Eating Disorder Obesity ▫1 in 5 adolescents 12 to 19 years of age is overweight ▫Greater risk of diabetes

4 Substance Abuse Smoking and tobacco Products ▫22 % of HS smoke, 12 % of male HS chew ▫3 % of MS smoke, 5 % MS chew ▫Showing a decrease for MS, small decrease for HS Alcohol ▫Decline in number but still #1 youth drug problem ▫More than 30% drank alcohol ▫Binge drinking highest among 18 to 21 yr. olds ▫Consequences: alcohol-related traffic fatalities, poor grades, parental trouble, unprotected sex, unemployment Substance abuse ▫20 % of HS used illicit drugs ▫Any substance (legal or illegal)that puts ones self in a hazardous situation ▫DARE and SADD

5 Sexually Transmitted Infection Include HIV/AIDS 50% of adolescents engaged in sexual relations 14% have had 4 or more partners 60% use a condom Teens have highest rates of HPV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis

7 Teen Pregnancy Non-married birth statics rose to record high 38% (teens part if number) 1991-2005 teen preg. #’s drop but are on the rise ( up 3 % in 2006) Teen preg. In U.S. higher than any other country 42 births per 1000 women ages 15-19 yrs.

9 Stress, Anxiety, Depression, & Suicide 29% of teens seriously considered suicide 12% teen rate ▫Higher attempts in females (double that of males) ▫Males 4 times more likely to die Suicide 3 rd leading cause of death in15 to 24 yr. olds
