Medical words are made up of different parts . The words can be made of 2 or 3 different word parts. These are called: The ROOT The SUFFIX The PREFIX When we say word analysis? What does this mean? Analysis comes form the verb to analyse(can be put on the white board. ) which means to look and understand the meaning. A medical word is made up of different parts. These parts have special names. There can be 2 or 3 different word parts in a single medical word. These are called the root the suffix and the prefix.

2 1)Root - it is usually a body part . Eg. Hepat = liver
2)Suffix Always comes at the end of the word. logy-study of 3)Prefix= Always comes at the beginning of the word sub = under ROOT is the same word as the ‘ root’ of the tree. THE ROOT of a word gives the main meaning of a word. Like the root of the tree has the main information to make the tree; the root of a word gives the main information for the meaning of the medical word. The root is usually a body part. The suffix is always at the end of the word. At the beginning is a small part called the prefix. It always comes at the beginning of the word but it is not in every medical word. Some medical words have a prefix and some do not.

Medical Word =combination of 2 or 3 of these word parts. Root + suffix Prefix + root +suffix Root + Root + suffix Prefix+ root +root +suffix Root +root +root + suffix The medical word is made of a combination of two or three word parts.

Hepatology /o/ Hepat/o/logy root suffix Recap at this point that the medical word is called a term from now on try to refer to a term instead of word. word=term. This medical term is hepatology. First thing to do is to look for the combining vowel. The ‘o’ in the middle of the word. Look for the ‘o’ in the word. This will tell us where the word divides. Put the lines in , one before the ‘o’ and one after the ‘o’ /o/ . Look for the word part at the end and is next to the ‘o’ Then the root word is the one before the ‘o’. We see that the ‘o’ joins the words together it is called the combining vowel because it combines or joins word parts together.

5 Meanings of the word parts
Hepat = liver=part of the body=Root part of the word ‘O’ = combining vowel joins combines the word parts together. -logy= study of=end part of the word and so is called suffix BREAK here for the Activity Dividing the words and then resume teaching on word analysis. Here are the meanings of the word parts. First hepat, means liver. It is a part of the body so this is the root part of the word. The o is the vowel that combines the 2 word parts together. You will find it in the middle between 2 or even 3 word parts. The end of the word is the suffix. So –logy means study of and it is the suffix .
