3 Voice is the form a verb takes to show whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action. There are two types of voice: active voice and passive voice. Verbs and Voice

4 Active voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is performing or causing the action. Example (Write One): Lebron threw the basketball. Lebron shot the basketball. Lebron scored three points. Active Voice

5 Passive voice is used when the subject receives the action. A double verb is always used. (To be + verb) Example (Write one): The ball was thrown by Lebron. The basket was shot by Lebron. The score was made by Lebron. Passive Voice

6 STRONG WRITING USES ACTIVE VOICE!!!! Active voice is more direct and concise. Passive voice is usually wordier. MOST OF THE TIME, YOU WANT TO USE ACTIVE VOICE!!!!

7  When intentionally trying to hide the subject of the sentence. For example, a politician might say, “The mistake was made by someone.” Hiding the subject helps him/her hide the blame.  When passive voice better emphasizes the main point of the message, such as “Children were harmed by the drunk driver.”

8 Raise your card to show “A” for ACTIVE or “P” for PASSIVE. Make a tally mark on your “score card” for each answer you get right. o Louise made the chocolate cake.

9  The chocolate cake was made by Louise.

10  The travel agent advertised the package.

11  The pencil was broken by him.

12  My brother broke the chain on my bike.

13  He broke the pencil on the floor.

14  The prom dress was hemmed by me.

15  I made the shot.

19 Example: The boy ate the apple. sv o Example rewritten: The apple was eaten by the boy. sv o Lastly, copy the example on a sentence strip. One side should be passive and one side should be active.
