DISSECTING FROGS! Introduction The Boys an the Frog An Aesop’s Fable Some boys, playing near a pond, saw a number of Frogs in the water and began to pelt them with stones. They killed several of them, when one of the Frogs, lifting his head out of the water, cried out: “Pray stop, my boys: what is sport to you, is death to us.” You have just been hired as a physiology scientist in Dr. Frogger’s laboratory. Your goal is to investigate the internal anatomy of a frog. Unlike the boys in Aesop’s fable below, you are sensitive to the frogs’ feelings. Therefore, you will be conducting your investigations virtually. What organs are present? Where are they located? What are their functions? Put on your lab aprons and goggles and venture on to your tasks.

DISSECTING FROGS! Task 1: Complete a virtual dissection of a frog. Task 2: Research the functions of key organs identified in the virtual dissection. Task 3: Complete a worksheet as a demonstration of what you have learned. Task As a Scientist in Dr. Frogger’s Laboratory, What are you expected to accomplish?

DISSECTING FROGS! Here are a list of steps you are expected to complete in your frog dissection research: Task 1: Complete the on-line virtual frog dissection by following this link: http://www.froguts.com/flash_content/demo/frog.html Task 2: Review the structures and functions of a frog’s organs. Pay attention particularly to the heart, liver, lungs, stomach, intestine, kidneys, bladder, brain, skeleton, and skin. Task 3: Complete the worksheet, identifying the location and function of the frog’s organs listed. Process

DISSECTING FROGS! Evaluation This is how your task completion will be evaluated Activity0-2 points3-5 points6-8 points9-10 pointsScore Ability to follow directions -assignment submitted 4+ days late -failure to submit as described (e-mail attachment) -assignment submitted 2-3 days late -failure to submit as described (e-mail attachment) -assignment submitted 1 day late -failure to submit as described (e-mail attachment) -assignment submitted on time -submission of assignment as described Description of organ functions -incorrect or incomplete description for 9 -12 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete description for 6 -8 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete description for 3– 5 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete description for 0 - 2 listed organs Identification of organ location -incorrect or incomplete location for 9 -12 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete location for 6 -8 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete location for 3– 5 listed organs -incorrect or incomplete location for 0 - 2 listed organs

DISSECTING FROGS! Conclusion As a Scientist in Dr. Frogger’s Laboratory, You Have: - Performed a virtual frog dissection. - Investigated the function and location of the key internal organs of a frog. For a further test of your new frog knowledge: Complete the “Build a Virtual Frog” activity on the following link: http://www-itg.lbl.gov/vfrog/builder.html
