Diehl THE CENTER FOR TEACHING & LEARNING EXCELLENCE HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE Student Engagement Equals Student Success Welcome to Houston Community College Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. As part of the Division of Instruction at HCC District, the Center for TLE sponsors numerous faculty development programs in support of enhancing faculty knowledge and skills in teaching strategies and learning methods. These programs consist of various workshops focused on important educational practices that contemporary research has proven to be effective in teaching today’s students. These programs are offered district-wide at various HCC campuses and are free to all HCC faculty, both part- and full-time. Research reflects that we learn (retain) 90% of what we teach others.

HCC CENTER for TLE TL 1071 – Implementing Learner-centered Teaching for Student Success Reasons to know your philosophy of education: To understand why you make the decisions that you do related to your teaching To ensure that you match yourself to an institution whose philosophy is similar to yours Reasons to know your primary learning style: By default, you will design curriculum based upon your primary learning style. To know your preference and to understand various learning styles, you will ensure that you create various teaching and learning strategies, learning engagement tasks, and assessment methods that address the various learning styles of your students offering all the opportunity to use their cognitive strengths to academically succeed.

Score that are high reflect a high passion for teaching Scores (within the same) range reflect flexibility; drawing from all approaches in a balanced way Very low scores could mean a low interest in teaching FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY: Interpret the data from your Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire. HCC CENTER for TLE TL 1071 – Implementing Learner-centered Teaching for Student Success Your Personal Philosophy of Education What underlying beliefs, values, assumptions, and attitudes about teaching and learning causes you to make curriculum design decisions about: Learning environment you create for students Teaching strategies you use to deliver content to students Learning tasks that you select to engage students Assessment methods to ensure mastery of content? LEARNING ACTIVITY: Consider and organize your thoughts; do a Google search and review several statements written by other educations; write a personal philosophy of education.
